“Responsive philosophy is not just about designing websites that adapt to screen size”
What's going on now:
- Print (particularly newspapers) has long been responsive
- Responsive Design has improved the web’s responsiveness,
- but there is still a large gap in layout flexibility and response.
A “responsive philosophy” should guide web design. Sites can/should respond to:
- Viewport size / device
- (Detected) user preferences
- User location
- Editorial priorities
- Business goals
Example: New LA Times site
- A variety of mix-and-match templates & components
- Direct lead-in to the next page
- Next page chosen by user preferences + manual adjustment
Outcomes & Goals
- Designs that better balances what users want to see with what publishers want to show
- Designs that simplify the user’s tasks by detecting location & each user’s typical behavior.
- Improvements for Brands?
